DAY 528

During his speech on illegal immigration, President Obama got the history of the Statue of Liberty completely wrong. White House photo, Pete Souza

Whiffing the history of the Statue of Liberty

During his speech on immigration reform at American University, President Obama trotted out Emma Lazarus’ poem “The New Colossus,” which is engraved on a plaque in the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.

The poem is fitting when talking about immigration — “give me your tired, and your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” — but he got the history of the poem and of Lady Liberty all wrong.

Here’s what Obama said:

It was at this time that a young woman named Emma Lazarus, whose own family fled persecution from Europe generations earlier, took up the cause of these new immigrants. Although she was a poet, she spent much of her time advocating for better health care and housing for the newcomers. And inspired by what she saw and heard, she wrote down her thoughts and donated a piece of work to help pay for the construction of a new statue — the Statue of Liberty — which actually was funded in part by small donations from people across America.

Years before the statue was built — years before it would be seen by throngs of immigrants craning their necks skyward at the end of long and brutal voyage, years before it would come to symbolize everything that we cherish — she imagined what it could mean. She imagined the sight of a giant statue at the entry point of a great nation -– but unlike the great monuments of the past, this would not signal an empire. Instead, it would signal one’s arrival to a place of opportunity and refuge and freedom.

He then quoted the poem, leaving out parts and restating others.

More than misquoting the poem, though, the president’s history is wrong.

Emma Lazarus did not, as Obama said, spend “much of her time advocating for better health care … for the newcomers.” She was a poet and a leading advocate of Zionism. Perhaps the work to which the president referred was her work for the Hebrew Emigrant Aid Society — which found Jewish refugees to the United States jobs and homes.

Lazarus did not donate her poem to raise money for the Statue of Liberty — the poem was auctioned to raise money for the pedestal of the statue. “Liberty Enlightening the World” was given to the United States, and paid for, by the French to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

That bears repeating. The French gave the statue to the United States to mark the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence — it had nothing to do with immigration.

On that same note, the statue was not “funded in part by small donations from people across America.” The deal was, the French would donate the statue and the Americans would provide the pedestal. And in fact, according to the National Park Service, the fundraisers for the pedestal fell far short of paying for it, and “Joseph Pulitzer stepped in and was able to raise the remaining money for the pedestal using his newspaper ‘The World.’ ”

While the president may be correct that Lazarus envisioned a statue that “would signal one’s arrival to a place of opportunity and refuge and freedom,” the poem wasn’t even read at the statue’s dedication.

It didn’t even appear in the pedestal until 1903, when Lazarus had been dead for six years, after her friend pushed to memorialize the poet.

Rush Limbaugh teed off on this during his show, and The Right Scoop has video.

Ok who ever posted this, really don’t know there American history. Yes France did build the status, but at one point they an out of funding for the status. So France and America did fund raisers to raise money to finish building it.

actually, France built a statue, not a status

They raised money for the base, which the statue stands on. No fund raising for the statue.. Gift from the French.. Gift..

Maybe this is why the speech was so light on details … the president (or his speech writers) can’t get any of them right!

getting a little picky separating the base from the statue huh….how many people differentiate? oh….just the haters.

Its not a matter of hatred at all. For 8 long years conservatives have had to listen to liberal news media and their proponents blast Bush and other semi-conservatives as ‘idiots’ over and over again for minor mistakes. The smear campaign has been so one-sided in this nation that it bears pointing out. Its NECESSARY to point out the double standard. It is NECESSARY to point out the lack of intellectual self-scrutiny on the part of all democrats supporting the current president and those who propogate his ideologies. Bush says the word ‘nuclear’ in a silly way and everyone points their cameras and runs the story over and over. SNL and John Steward roll in the big bucks mocking him for things like this or MISquoting something Sarah Palin said to leave the impression that she is a ditz. How much did you hear about Obama mispronouncing the word ‘Corpsman’ as ‘corpsEman’? A U.S. president who is so clueless about the military that he can’t properly pronounce a common military term? Im fine to let such things go as simple mistakes, the question is – have liberals let such things slide over the past years of Bush’s term? Is there a double standard? Yes…there is.

Secondly, when a U.S. PRESIDENT attempts to use a bit of mangled history, and selective out-of-context quoting to invoke some kind of positive feeling toward his amnesty propelled latino-vote-fetching political agenda, that should irritate every freedom loving American, regardless of party offiliation.

I agree with most of the above, but to call bush jr mistakes minor is way off base,or have anyone heard of any chem weapons found in Irak yet, wasnt it the main reason that the usa went there?an not informing the public that the gov aproved to tap on privete conversations of its own zitizens, sorry I got no political color, but in my opinio gwb,is nothing less than the worst Usa pressident in history, and verry closse to nothing more than a talking monkey!!

Jay, thank you for your posting! Finally! An intelligent and beautifully stated rebuttal to a leftist’s ignorant comment!

seeing the statue was the gift and america had to put in the base and foundation there is a huge difference. they gave us this statue to commemorate our 100th anniversery of our declaration of independance we just had to provide a way to put it up and put it together. Pulitzer did the majority of the fundraising if you read your history, NY was broke at that time and he got people from all over the country that read his paper to donate to getting the statue on a pedestal and put up. A way to honor the gift from France.

Most non citizens know very little of American history.
Sooo if OBama were a citizen he’d know of which he speaks. What an ass.

Jay, you hit the nail right on the head! Thank you for speaking up – and very succinctly – for all of us who know history, and what a history any future generations will have from Obama (that is, if there are any future generations)!

I’m seriously wondering why the heck people can’t even spell the words they write in their comments…. Did you NOT go to school? If you did, perhaps you should go back for a little refresher. I can’t speak for everyone else but I for one personally have a hard time even considering the opinions of people who are illiterate.

Debbie said July 5, 2010. Reply

I agree…their opinions are not even valuable when spelling is incorrect. In Tamars comment…she states people should go back to school to learn therehistory….well…I am appauled…anyone who makes a statement and does not know how to use possessive nouns should not make any comments. There and Their have two/to/2 different meanings..Go back to school to refresh on that course…..thanks

I agree. Misspelling appalled in this instance is quite ironic, though.

Why don’t you Obama bashers get a life. They are all in it together, and they are all the same. America will crumble….so spend your time getting your life in order, and stock up of food, water, and weapons. World order is actually right around the corner, as is martial law. Get ready, because here they come, and last but not least, DO NOT CONFORM!!!!

Yvonne & all you conserative bashers, Obama, Pelosi & Reid are the idiots & all the morons who support them. They are the reason we are heading into martial law. they are destroying America from the inside. Obama needs to fire his speech writers & advisors because they are idiots feeding him all of this misinformation.

He also was kinda misleading about Emma Lazarus’ personal history…. her family was in New York since colonial period. The way he made it sound was that he family hadn’t been there very long.

One can not endear themselves to the people if said person doesn’t have a clue about what they speak….i must admit, thru the campaign process, he sorta won me over with his smooth talking. Obama is certainly, if nothing else, a great speaker and he’s very convincing (in the short run). but time for talk is well past over, and the actions of his ‘reign’ is speaking far more than his words. it is truly sad that the leader of our country is making an a$$ out of himself for the whole world to witness.

He may have erred on the history BUT the message is the same, if you are INVITING these immigrants here, why are you saying you will arrest and deport them?
The whole “seal the boarder” crap started with 9-11… They THOUGHT the bombers were illegal, they were not..
How do you stop people who come in on work or school visas, ones who come from Canada for vacation?
Will we be stopping this? If not, “securing the boarders” is a failed attempt to keep the “Mexican” (brown skinned) people out.. Nothing more, nothing less….
